The domaine was established in 1920 by Raoul Raymond, when he pulled up cherry orchards and replaced them with vines. The domaine was called Domaine des Cigalons and was taken over by Raoul’s son, Emil. In 1978, Emil transferred part of the vineyards to his daugther, Dany when she married Christian Berthet-Rayne and, together with rented vineyards, they established Domaine Berthet-Rayne. Dany and Christian adopted organic vineyard practices early on after the premature death of Christian’s father who had worked with chemical products.
Their daughter Laure started working with her parents in 2003 and now runs the domaine with her husband Martial Capeau (who came from a tomato and vegetable agricultural background) and they now have responsibility for the domain. Laure and Martial bought an additional 1.2ha (2.7 acres) when they took over responsibility for the domaine.
Domaine Berthet-Rayne cultivates 18ha of vineyards in Châteauneuf du Pape and 8ha in Côtes du Rhône. The domaine was certified Organic in 2007.
