Domaine Bressy-Masson

The Bressy family have been cultivating vines since the 19th century. In 1947, the grandfather of the current owner, Marie-France Masson was the first generation to ferment wine from the family vineyards. With no siblings, Marie-France (maiden name Bressy) took over at a young age when her father died suddenly. Marie-France’s husband, Thierry Masson manages the vineyards and the winemaking. The domaine has 32 ha (78 acres), mostly in the cru of Rasteau with some vineyards in Côtes du Rhône classification. The terroir of Rasteau is mostly on south-facing slopes with a little more clay than some other appellations and produces full-bodied wines.
The domaine is focussed on dry reds but also produces two, sometimes three Vin Doux Naturel (fortified) wines including the wonderful VDN Rasteau Ambré which is a partially oxidised wine aged for several years in old barrels without topping up after evaporation. The winemaking is traditional, with the reds fermented and partially aged in concrete. Some of the wine is aged in foudres (very large, old oak barrels).
