Domaine des Amouriers is owned by Igor Chudzikiewicz who manages the winery with the husband and wife team of Patrick and Pascale Gras. Igor’s father, Jocelyn died in a car accident when Igor was only 15 years old and the domaine was managed by Patrick and Pascale for 10 years whilst Igor finished his schooling and completed his wine education.

The name “Amouriers” is the provencal word for a mulberry tree. Like most wine domaines pre-the catastrophic frost of 1956, Domaine des Amouriers was a mixed farm, growing grapes, olives, vegetables and mulberry trees to provide leaves to feed the silk worms.

Silk produced in Provence was transported up the Rhône to the silk manufacturing centre of Lyon. Today, in common with almost everyone else in the Southern Rhône, grapes for wine are the sole crop. The domaine cultivates 30 ha (75 acres) of vines, the majority of which is in Vacqueyras, with some land in the IGP designation. The winery has been certified Organic since 2014.

All the reds are fermented in concrete. Most of the wine is matured in concrete, though two of the cuvées spend a little time in demi-muids (600 litre barrels). Domaines des Amouriers’ Vacqueyras wines incorporate a high proportion of Syrah than the average for the appellation. That said, the reds are exhibit the classic Vacqueyras style of spicy fruit with firm tannins. The domaine also produces a 100% Syrah wine from its Vacqueyras terroir, but the AOC requires a minimum of 50% Grenache in the blend. As such, this wine is labelled as IGP “Les Hautes Terrasses”.

The white Vacqueyras is fermented and aged in newer demi-muids and benefits from a couple of years of ageing. It is a wonderful accompaniment to rich fish dishes, chicken and (with bottle age) mature cheeses.
