Domaine du Galet des Papes

The Mayard family have been in Châteauneuf du Pape since the days of Napoleon. Not surprisingly there are quite a view different wineries owned by Mayards.
Fernand Mayard built the first cellars in 1929 and his grand-son, Jean-Luc Mayard took over as the fifth generation of winegrowers in 1976. Jean-luc was joined by his daughter, Blandine after completing her wine studies and work experience at other wine estates. Domaine du Galet des Papes cultivates 13 ha of land in Châteauneuf du Pape with 1 ha in Côtes du Rhône.
Their Châteauneuf du Pape vineyards are mainly located on three diverse terroir: Les Seres in the south (clayish-gravel with stones), Valori in the east (sand, clay and pebbles), Cabrières in the north (clay, sand and large rocks). The wine making is traditional with partial de-stalking, co-fermentation of the different varieties in concrete and long maceration periods.
The red wines are mostly matured in foudres. The reds are of a classic old style – wild herbs, firm tannins and power. The white Châteauneuf du Pape is a full-bodied wine that works well with chicken and mature cheeses.
In the US, the wines are also sold under the The “Pieds Dans Les Galets” label. This label is used by one of their US importers, Kysela and is the same wine as sold under the “Galets des Papes”.
