Domaine le Garrigue was established in 1850 and is now run by the 5th generation of the Bernard family, Maxime, Martine and Pierre. They work together with the 6th generation, Virginie, Agnes, David and Max.

The domaine cultivates 83ha (211 acres) of vineyards, including 59ha in Vacqueyras, 3ha in Gigondas, 1ha in Beaumes de Venise (dry red wine), 11ha in Côtes-du-Rhône and 8ha under the IGP designation. The average age of vines is over 60 years old.

The is one of the most traditional wineries that I know, with the expression of “terroir” at the core of almost everything that they do. As a result, they produce absolutely unique wines, vintage by vintage.

These wines are grown in the vineyard, not “made in the cellar”. As Pierre, who looks after the work in the cellar, once said to me: “I am not the mother of these wines, I am the mid-wife…”.

Domaine la Garrigue use no chemicals in the vineyard and there is minimal intervention in the cellar – natural yeasts, no de-stemming, no oak, no fining and no filtration – so as to maximise the expression of terroir in their wines. The reds are fermented and aged in concrete vats (picture of vat door, above) and the white is fermented and aged in stainless steel.

The reds benefit from at least 3 to 4 years ageing (from the vintage date) in bottle and evolve sublimely over 10 to 15 years. The white is wonderfully fragrant, clean, fresh and mineral. The delightful rosé is produced via the traditional saignée method where a proportion of pink juice is bled from the red wine vat a few hours after loading with crushed red grapes.

There is no question that the red, white and rosé wines of Domaine la Garrigue are properly appreciated with food, and there is no better place to appreciate these wines than at the enchanting Les Florets restaurant (and hotel), run by Pierre’s son, Thierry and his wife Dominique. The food is sublime, the service is warm and faultless and the setting, in the Dentelles hills, is truly magical. You cannot say that you have visited Gigondas unless you have dined at Les Florets.

Vacqueyras “Osez le Detour”: Old vine Syrah. Matured in concrete. Ageing potential: Up to 12 years.
