Chateau de la Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red 2019

35% Syrah, 33% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre, 1% Other varieties

This red is sourced from varied soils of clay-limestone, sandy clay, and sandstone scattered with rolled pebbles.

Deep garnet colour with purple highlights. The nose on this 2019 red from Château La Nerthe is rich and complex, showing blackcurrant, cherry, and olive, with peppery and floral notes from the high proportion of Syrah. The palate is full and dense, marked by herbal accents of laurel, thyme, and liquorice, while ripe tannins give depth and plum-like richness at the core. Despite the warmth of the vintage, the wine retains a fresh menthol lift, offering depth, balance, and a long finish. A magnificent wine with the potential to age for two decades or more.

Producer profile

Château La Nerthe traces its origins to the Tulle de Villefranche family, who transformed a simple bastide into one of the Rhône Valley’s great estates, building the château, pioneering bottling, and sending their wines to the finest tables across Europe and even North America. After the phylloxera crisis, the property was revived by Commander Joseph Ducos, whose innovative grafting techniques restored Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s vineyards and helped establish what would become France’s first Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, while also giving the appellation its enduring name. Today, under the stewardship of the Richard family, the estate has been restored and expanded, with a remarkable heritage of old vines and a full conversion to organic farming, certified since 1998. Château La Nerthe remains true to its legacy of excellence and innovation, preserving a unique heritage that is both viticultural and architectural.
