Domaine du Pourra L’Exclu 2015

95% Grenache, 5% Syrah and Cinsault

Certified Organic grower. From two adjacent plots located between 340 and 440 metres in the Dentelles de Montmirail above the village. This cooler micro-climate brings extra freshness to this wine. Grapes from a red clay and limestones plot are blended with grapes from a plot of hot, dry poor soil of broken limestone bringing a lovely tannic structure and minerality to the wine.

L’Exclu is grown from Domaine du Pourra’s fabulous limestone rock Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret terroir in the hills, but the wine is classified as Vin de France because the appellation requires a higher percentage of Syrah in the blend than is the case for this wine.

The 2015 vintage produced powerful wines with big tannins and significant ageing potential. Jean-Christian Mayordome, therefore, decided to age this wine for 36 months in part-used barrels to open up the wine and smooth the tannins. The nose is a vibrant array of black fruit and spices. The palate is warm and generous with smooth tannins, lovely chunky fruits, spice and notes of undergrowth. A delicious mineral and fruit finish.

Producer profile

Jean-Christian Mayordome purchased the domaine in 1998. The domaine vineyards – located between 300 and 480 m of altitude – include 11 ha (27 acres) in the cru of Gigondas, and 15ha in Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret. Very rocky soils and an old average of vines combines to produce very low yields. The Gigondas vineyards are high in limestone content, with clay and sand. The Séguret vineyards are heavy in limestone which is not typical of the appellation, producing much more robust and age-worthy wines than would normally be expected. As well as running a winery, Jean-Christian works a doctor, specialising homeopathy. This natural approach is reflected in the wines with organic practices in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. With a view to producing even more natural wines, the domaine adopted biodynamic practices in the vineyard and was certified Biodynamic in 2019.
