Chateau Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape Esprit 2020/17/16/15/13/10

13 Châteauneuf du Pape grape varieties: 50% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Cinsault, 15% others

L’Esprit de Maucoil Is the result of a high-end selection and is only produced in exceptional years. This wine comes from the Domaine’s oldest vines (70 years on average), planted with Châteauneuf du Pape’s 13 grape varieties with a yield of around 15 hl/ha.

Strong colour with garnet nuances. Deep on the nose, infused with Kirsch-like and jammy strawberry notes, highlighted by fine toasted notes accentuating its complexity. On the palate, aromas of black fruit and garrigue scrubland are elegantly underpinned by polished tannins and remarkable freshness. This is a wine with a great deal of breadth, an elegant, rich smoothness, and good development potential which will come out over time. L’Esprit de Maucoil can be laid down for around 15 years, depending on the vintage.

Producer profile

The history of the Château has been shaped by its different occupants over the centuries. After serving as a base for Roman legions, who were attracted by the spring running through the property and the proximity of the Via Agrippa, several winegrowing families followed on from each other at the estate from the 17th century onwards. So the cultivation of vines at Château Maucoil dates back to this era and some plots planted in 1895still exist today. In the 20th century, the Goguet de la Salmonière family and the Quiot family contributed much to the development and prosperity of Château Maucoil. The Arnaud family, who already owned vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, decided to purchase the estate in 1995. The new generation then took up the torch in 2009 with a strong desire to secure the future of the estate and manage it in an environmentally-responsible manner. In 2022, the Duseigneur estate, a specialist in biodynamics, took over the reins of the Château and is in the process of converting the estate to biodynamic wine-growing.
