Domaine des Chanssaud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chanssaud d’Antan 2016

Old vines: 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre

Certified Organic grower. Shallow clay-limestone soil and very, very stony. Located on the highest plateau of Châteauneuf du Pape towards the northern end of the appellation.

This special cuvée is produced in limited quantities following a very rigorous selection of parcels with 90 year old vines from the rocky plateau of Châteauneuf du Pape. Only the greatest vintages are bottled and numbered. The wine is rich and powerful with aromas of blackcurrant, leather and truffle with hints of pepper and spices. The mouth has red fruits and blackberries with soft silky tannins. Its aromatic complexity with good tannins provide a remarkably long finish in the mouth. Best drunk 4 years after the vintage to allow the tannins to soften and the complexity to sing. This elegant, rich wine is the perfect accompaniment to meat in sauce and strong cheeses.

Producer profile

Elodie Jaume is the 6th generation of a wine growing family having taken over the reigns of the estate from her father Patrick. The estate covers 35 hectares, of which 14ha are located in the northern sector of Châteauneuf du Pape and 21ha in Côtes du Rhône. The terroir of Châteauneuf du Pape is predominantly sandy with clay and large rounded rocks, partly on a raised plateau, and partly on a north-facing slope descending from the plateau. The average vine age is approximately 60 yrs old and the oldest vines in Châteauneuf du Pape are used to produce their “Chanssaud d’Antan” cuvée in the best years. Some of the Côtes du Rhône terroir is located on the northern boundary of Châteauneuf du Pape and thus produces a very high class Côtes du Rhône, labelled as “Charles de Valois”. The property has been certified Organic since 2015. The reds are fermented in concrete and the Châteauneuf du Pape reds are matured in a mixture of concrete and foudres (very large oak casks). The white Châteauneuf du Pape is a full-bodied wine that marries extremely well with white meat and cheese.
