Domaine des Chanssaud Côtes du Rhône Charles de Valois 2016

Old vines 90% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre.

Certified Organic grower. 70 to 80 year old vines just outside the northern boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Red clay, sandstone and very stony.

This is a high class Côtes du Rhône that is grown from 70 to 80 year old vines on terroir just outside the northern boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Medium-bodied, this wine demonstrates all the complexity, minerality and balance that one would find in its illustrious neighbour. The nose is perfumed array of red fruits, minerals, spice and pepper. Lovely fruit middle with minerals and notes of undergrowth. Silky tannins with a lovely mineral and fruit finish.

Shipping costs are calculated per box of 6 bottles. Each box can contain a mixed selection of wines.

Producer profile

Elodie Jaume is the 6th generation of a wine growing family having taken over the reigns of the estate from her father Patrick. The estate covers 35 hectares, of which 14ha are located in the northern sector of Châteauneuf du Pape and 21ha in Côtes du Rhône. The terroir of Châteauneuf du Pape is predominantly sandy with clay and large rounded rocks, partly on a raised plateau, and partly on a north-facing slope descending from the plateau. The average vine age is approximately 60 yrs old and the oldest vines in Châteauneuf du Pape are used to produce their “Chanssaud d’Antan” cuvée in the best years. Some of the Côtes du Rhône terroir is located on the northern boundary of Châteauneuf du Pape and thus produces a very high class Côtes du Rhône, labelled as “Charles de Valois”. The property has been certified Organic since 2015. The reds are fermented in concrete and the Châteauneuf du Pape reds are matured in a mixture of concrete and foudres (very large oak casks). The white Châteauneuf du Pape is a full-bodied wine that marries extremely well with white meat and cheese.
